Jerry Twombly has worked in the area of organisational development for over 45 years. After serving in various administrative roles in higher education, Jerry left his post as Vice President for Advancement at Grace College and Theological Seminary in 1986 to establish a consulting firm.

Jerry’s consulting clients span the globe and include multi-national ministries, universities, schools, mission organisations, and other non-governmental organisations committed to serving God and others. He has written several books including Funding Your Vision: New Hope for Nonprofits (considered the defining book on relational development), Transforming Culture: The Church at Work in the World, and You Snooze, You Lose: Thriving in a Turbulent Economy.

GOAL—The goal of this year-long mentoring program is to walk through an entire year together with leaders of organisations, addressing each of the typical issues that occur at various stages of the developmental year. Five scheduled webinars, an intense three-day retreat midway through the program, and scheduled group activities at the annual European Leadership Forum will provide opportunity to explore the intricacies of how to build a

sustainable 21st century ministry. Students electing to pursue the professional development certification CDP (Certified Development Professional) can complete all requirements during the course of this year.

  • PLAN—The program will include the following:
    European Leadership Forum (ELF) Organisational Development and Fundraising Network, May 2017 Meals with Jerry at the 2017 European Leadership Forum
  • Five two-hour webinars and webinar assignments
  • Three-day retreat in Malenovice, Czech Republic (January TBA, 2018)
  • Pre-Forum Conference, 18-19 May, 2018

PARTICIPANTS—The mentoring group will be limited to 12 participants. Participants will be expected to attend each webinar and fulfill bi-monthly assignments.

QUALIFICATIONS—Each participant must be in an administrative role within an organization, either as a staff member of an organization or as a volunteer whose work involves areas relating to development (fund-raising, client recruitment, public relations, planning, etc.).

FEES – In addition to the fees for the 2017 and 2018 ELF, participants need to pay a fee for the January Retreat (TBD), and for the 2018 Pre-Forum Conference (60 Euros for a single room, 80 Euros for a double room, and 30 Euros for scholarship recipients).

Webinar and Meeting Schedule

Webinar One: Great Expectations—Focusing on the Year Ahead—Monday, July 24, 2017 (18:00-19:30 GMT). This is an initial get together where we will outline the program for this year and explain the homework assignments and what will be required for those who want to pursue full certification.

Webinar Two: An Outline of the Development Year and the Developmental Audit—Monday, August 21, 2017 (18:00-20:00 GMT) –This session will focus on the typical “developmental calendar” . .. what takes place, when, and how to set up a schedule for the year Directions in terms of how to develop a development audit for your organization. Prior to the Presentation—Required to read the book: Funding Your Vision: New Hope for Non Profits .

Webinar Three: The Secret to Raising Money/Bridging—Monday, September 12, 2017 (18:00-20:00 GMT) – This session will focus on why people give and ways in which you can share opportunity wherein anyone could be involved ion partnering with your ministry. Bridging is one of the most significant tools in development; in this sessions you will learn how to use it to grow your ministry.

Webinar Four: Applying the Rules of Development and Focus on Organization—Monday, October 2, 2017 (18:00-20:00 GMT) –This session will speak specifically to the application of the core rules of development. And since most development activity fails to achieve its potential because of the failure to execute well, this session will focus on how to organize for success. Webinar Five: Quantifying Goals, Strategic Planning, and Building a 21st Century Ministry—Monday, November 7, 2017 (18:00-20:00 GMT) –This session will focus on the process of quantifying goals. You’ll learn how to plan move at the macro and micro level. Adaptations need to occur to maximize our impact in our changing world. Read the book You Snooze, You Lose: How to Thrive in a Turbulent Economy prior to this session.

This time will be spent working through a wide range of development scenarios, situations common to ministry of every kind. Students will work together in analyzing each scenario and building a case to address the challenges being faced by the nonprofit examples that will be provided. We will have further opportunity to discuss individual challenges, seeking the engagement of others.

Webinar Six: 7 Essential Elements of Highly Effective Marketing Campaigns— Monday, February 12, 2018 (18:00-20:00 GMT) –Special speaker for this session will be Keith Ogorek. Mr. Ogorek is well known in America as an authority on issues relating to how to build a comprehensive marketing campaign for your organization..

Webinar Seven: Linkage: The Key to Development Success—Monday, March 19, 2018 (18:00-20:00 GMT) –There are a lot of rules in development, but none more critical than the rule of linkage. You will learn in this session how to use this tool to expand your impact.

Webinar Eight: How to Write Award Winning Grants/Direct Mail—
Monday, April 9, 2018 (18:00-20:00 GMT) –Emily Hutchison has raised multiplied millions of dollars from grants, both corporate and foundations. Her award winning grants have been the model of scores of organizations. Emily will join me in an engaging conversation about how to get things done. Richard DeVeau will join me for the second hour to discuss ways in which you can write letters with an impact.

FINAL WRAP-UP MEETING, May, 2018— Prior to the annual Forum convocation, our mentoring group will meet to complete their final assignment and receive their “graduation” diploma as a Certified Development Professional.
