Jerry Twombly has worked in the area of organisational development for over 45 years. After serving in various administrative roles in higher education, Jerry left his post as Vice President for Advancement at Grace College and Theological Seminary in 1986 to establish a consulting firm.

Jerry’s consulting clients span the globe and include multi-national ministries, universities, schools, mission organisations, and other non-governmental organisations committed to serving God and others. He has written several books including Funding Your Vision: New Hope for Nonprofits (considered the defining book on relational development), Transforming Culture: The Church at Work in the World, and You Snooze, You Lose: Thriving in a Turbulent Economy.

Overview

THE GOAL: To walk through an entire year with leaders of organisations, addressing each of the typical issues that occur at various stages of the developmental year, and to explore the intricacies of how to build a sustainable 21st century ministry.

THE PLAN

  • Attendance at the 2016 Organisational Development/Fundraising Network
  • Five two-hour webinars and webinar assignments
  • A three-day retreat at Malenovice, Czech Repuplic (9-12 January 2017)
  • Meals with Jerry at the 2016 European Leadership Forum
  • A Pre-Forum Conference at the 2017 Forum

THE PARTICIPANTS: Twelve leaders of organisations who are willing to commit to being a part of a learning community based upon the above outlined stipulations.

THE QUALIFICATIONS: Each participant must be in an administrative role within an organisation, whether as a staff member or as a volunteer, with development-related work (fundraising, client recruitment, public relations, planning, etc.).

THE COMMITMENTS: In addition to submitting an application, in order to be accepted as a participant, you will need to commit to the following:

  1. Attend all sessions, including the Organisational Development/Fundraising Network at the 2016 Forum, the five webinar sessions throughout the year, the three-day retreat, and the Pre-Forum Conference at the 2017 Forum.
  2. Access all webinars on a computer with adequate broadband internet connection, and a head set.
  3. Thoroughly review a selection of pre-assigned materials before each webinar, and complete all writing assignments. These materials may consist of books, book chapters, and articles, as well as FOCL Online and YouTube videos. The required texts for this class include: Funding Your Vision: New Hope for Nonprofits, Certified Development Professional Handbook, Transforming Culture: The Church at Work in the World, and You Snooze You Lose: Thriving in a Turbulent Economy.
  4. Secure copies of all required readings. The cost of the books listed above is 40.00 US. They will be delivered at the Forum in Wisla for your convenience.
  5. Complete all pre and post-webinar writing assignments by their assigned due dates (TBD)
  6. Malenovice, Czech Rebuplic Retreat Cost: (100 euros for Eastern Europeans; 120 euros for Western Europeans). 2017 Pre-Forum Conference (20 euros for Eastern Europeans; 60 euros for a double room, and 80 euros for a single room for Western Europeans).

*Students electing to pursue the professional development certification CDP (Certified Development Professional) can complete all requirements during the course of this year.

THE 2016 RETREAT: All Organisational Development participants will meet with Jerry Twombly at Malenovice, Czech Rebuplic for a retreat (9-12 January 2017). The cost will be 100 euros for Eastern Europeans, and 120 euros for Western Europeans. Payments, and planning for the retreat will be worked out with Jerry Twombly. Participants should pay for their own travel expenses.

THE 2016 NETWORK: All Organisational Development participants will meet with Jerry Twombly in Wisła, Poland for the 2016 Forum Organizational Development/Fundraising Network. Participants must also apply for the Forum separately and be accepted. Participants should also pay for their own travel expenses to the Forum.

The current plan for Organisational Development mentoring includes the following five, two-hour webinars.

Webinar One: An Outline of the Development Year and the Developmental Audit

Date/Time: Monday, 22 August 2016 from 18:00-20:00 GMT

  1. Read the book Funding Your Vision: New Hope for Non Profits in preparation for this session.
  2. This session will focus on the typical “developmental calendar”: what takes place each year, when does it occur, and how do you set up a schedule for the year. You will learn directions for how to develop a development audit for your organisation.
  3. Written assignments (TBD)

Webinar Two: Applying the Rules of Development and Focus on Organisation

Date/Time: Monday, 10 October 2016 from 18:00-20:00 GMT

  1. Download The Organisational Planning Primer from the website: www.bgwdevelopment.com. Read this document in its entirety in preparation for this session.
  2. This session will speak specifically to the application of the core rules of development. Most development activity fails to achieve its potential because of the failure to execute well, so this session will focus on how to organise for success.
  3. Written assignments (TBD)

Webinar Three: Quantifying Goals, Strategic Planning, and Building a 21st Century Ministry

Date/Time: Monday, 12 November 2016 18:00-20:00 GMT

  1. Read the book You Snooze, You Lose: How to Thrive in a Turbulent Economy in preparation for this session.
  2. This session will focus on the process of quantifying goals. You will learn how to plan move at the macro and micro level. We need to be able to adapt in order to maximize our impact in a changing world.
  3. Written assignments (TBD)

Webinar Four: How to Build a Comprehensive Public Relations Program

Date/Time: Monday, February 6 2017 from 18:00-20:00 GMT

  1. Pre-Session Assignment: TBA
  2. Special speaker for this session will be Keith Ogorek. Mr. Ogorek is well known in America as an authority on issues relating to how to build a comprehensive public relations program. He will speak specifically to the issue of your organisational “promise” and how you intend to deliver it.

Webinar Five: How to Write Award Winning Grants/Direct Mail

Date/Time: Monday, 3 April 2017 18:00-20:00 GMT

  1. Pre-Session Assignment: TBA
  2. Emily Hutchison has raised multiplied millions of dollars from grants, both corporate and foundation. Her award-winning grants have served as a model for scores of organisations. Emily will join me in an engaging conversation about how to get things done. Richard DeVeau will join me for the second hour to discuss ways to write impactful letters.

Retreat Assignments

Date/Time: The retreat in Malenovice, Czech Rebuplic will begin with dinner at 17.30 on 9 January and end at noon on 12 January 2017. The cost will be 100 euros for Eastern Europeans, and 120 euros for Western Europeans.

Case Studies and Sharing: This time will be spent working through a wide range of development scenarios, situations common to ministry of every kind. Students will work together in analyzing each scenario and building a case to address the challenges faced by the nonprofit in each example provided. We will also have further opportunity to discuss individual challenges, seeking the engagement of others.
